10 Pieces of Ultralight Gear ALL Backpackers Should Use!

I am not an ultralight backpacker – but I still LOVE these 10 pieces of ultralight gear! This gear is extremely light, doesn’t sacrifice any comfort, and doesn’t break the bank either. By making the switch to the ultralight gear in this video I’ve managed to cut four pounds of weight from my pack, and if I had known about this gear sooner it would have saved me about $300! Regardless of if you are a traditional backpacker or an ultralighter, this is gear I swear by to make your kit lighter and easier to carry without sacrificing any comfort at camp!

  1. The main thing about ultralight for many people is the PRICE. True ultralight sleeping bags and quilts cost hundreds of dollars, like the one you link. I would argue it is WAY more cost effective these days to get an ultralight TENT and just a normal lightweight sleeping pad/quilt. There have been massive improvements in tent technology these days. It is actually reasonable to get an ultralight tent for under $200 in that 2-2.5 lb range. Get a normal lightweight sleeping bag thats 2-3 pounds for around $100 and boom, the only combo youll ever need for most weather conditions. I do like the sleeping pad suggestion, great idea there.

  2. They should make an umbrella that converts to hiking pole or vise versa. Just an idea that occurs

  3. I would love to use those super slim foam pads issue is they don’t make any for long wide 25" pads and I refuse to sleep on a 20" pad.

  4. I’ve used gravity filters for years. There are many effective options. You need to branch out from swayer. It’s by far the worst filter I’ve used. By the way. It’s called a coupling. Not some crazy fancy device. A super common plumbing component.

  5. Enough with the umbrellas alreadyπŸ˜‚ i get that people get paid to advertise but seriously?! An umbrella? I personally will just lose 10lbs to compensate for lack of insanely overpriced gearπŸ˜‚

  6. There’s a balance between weight and comfort in the sense that there are items you don’t actually need but they can make the experience more enjoyable. Sometimes I like to bring a small Saladmaster saucepan so I can eat better. I also cut a sleeping pad from a sheet of aluminized bubble insulation with would be the minimum and get the job done but a full sized air mattress on top of a full sized foam mattress is top comfort.

  8. As military I love watching these and I saw the little metal trowel and was like oh that’s a great idea for a cat hole out in the field….. nvm I already have to carry my E-tool/shovel that’s 20x that size πŸ˜‚

  9. I organize my stuff with ziploc bags from the grocery store. Sandwich bags hardly register on my kitchen scale, and even larger, heavier, freezer bags have negligible weight. Anyone who feels a need for dyneema bags has an obsessive/compulsive disorder. A dyneema tent stake bag is the extreme form of this disorder and likely indicates an incurable condition. The bag is not significantly lighter or stronger than the bag you already have. If you enjoy buying new gear and can easily afford it, I understand, but don’t delude yourself that you really need these things.

If you want something lighter than a baseball cap, wear a visor. A visor is to a baseball cap as a quilt is to a sleeping bag. It removes the unnecessary material. You have hair on your head for a reason. When I stop selling heroin, I may make visors from dyneema and sell them on GGG.

I like the gravity filter. I already have one, but yours is definitely lighter. My Waterdrop filter has 28mm connectors on both ends, so I don’t need the adapter. The Waterdrop gravity bag and hose leaves my clean water bottle exposed to bugs for the duration. I hate buying something I already have, but you sold me here.

I’m in the market for a quilt and watched this video for advice. You didn’t disappoint. Thanks. The down hood suggestion at the end was worth watching too, but you should fire whoever did your captions. Seriously, "Ultralight Gear #6" wasn’t worth the effort.

  10. I swear I thought you took that hood from a coat and you just like unzipped it from the coat and that’s what you use to cover your head when you use that sleeping bagπŸ˜…

  11. I would gladly pop a squat on your floor with or without a sit pad (sings With or without you parody in head)to share wine and adventure stories. Because I already opt for the floor at friends homes.

I love that you love when gear comes in a variety of colors. Burnt orange gear breaks the tie for me every time.

  12. Great video. My other "won’t hike without it" lightweight item is my home made reflectix coosey for my tokes titanium pot. It has a handle slot. It keeps the heat in my pot, weighs nothing, and is the "bag" that my kitchen lives in.

  13. Great video. I’m not about to swap out my ziploc bags for dyneema stuff sacks, but thanks again for the informative content Miranda! Learned something as always πŸ™‚

  14. Do I backpack? No. Am I an outdoors type of person? No.
Do I go camping at all? No.
Have I been binge watching your videos for the past two days subscribed and placed so many things into my Amazon wish list? YES! πŸ˜…πŸ˜… keep up the great work πŸŽ‰

  15. As a person who lives in MN, I love GGG! Best background voice "They’ve only been used twice" πŸ™‚

  16. I don’t backpack but I do go out and use a hammock. But that’s an author like and that’s what I use ultra light stuff

  17. I will definitely not buy more gear. I just came for the humor and the energy. It was worth it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Thank you!

  18. I really appreciate your videos! Do any of the comments below have where to buy these items with links?

  19. I got a piece of 1/8 foam underlayment for laminate floors and cut it to size. 50 cents at a thrift shop. And it’s yellow. Hard to leave behind.

  20. When back home, toss your gators & socks into your washing machine. Best if in a bleach load.

  21. Could also use the umbrella for a snow stick. If you needed that, lol. And by snow stick, i mean smackin all the branches on the trail so you dont get wet over time πŸ˜‚

Contractor bags make great pack liners also

  22. Question for hiking friends: I have yet to find a trowel that outperforms a walking stick. Far over half of the cat-holes I’ve tried to dig with a trowel needed the leverage and tungsten tip of a hiking pole/walk stick. So why even carry a trowel? Am I missing something?

  23. Cnoc is pronounced as closer to "k-knock" as in the GΓ idhlig for hill (rather than "c-knock"), hope that helps! Love from Scotland xxx

  24. Mirand my favorite thing about you is that you can demonstrate simultaneously the most effective and least realistic ways to use any piece of gear.

  25. Found the links πŸ€ͺ. Hopefully, backpacking won’t be as challenging. Your videos are funny and informative with great scenery and music! Thank you!

  26. Do people actually use pack covers!!??? I used one once, and my backpack filled with water soaking through the bit at the top of my back where there was a small gap due to the straps…. I kind of assumed, in that moment, that I was mistaken and pack covers were actually just safety devices to make you more visible to hunters, or rescuers, haha. Apparently not!

  27. I weigh all of my backpacking gear down to the gram. Why carry extra weight when comfort and usefulness are not compromised? I now carry the same gear for bikepacking. I bikepack with a tow behind cart, this is sooo nice. I setup camp, unhook the cart and ride/explore! We live in a time that gear weight can be greatly reduced, just do it.
Since I started bikepacking I no longer have to camp near a water supply, I carry a gallon of water with me, something I’d never do backpacking. Need more water? Just find your nearest water supply and take it back to camp.
Getting out and exploring/enjoying the great outdoors is what it’s all about….

  28. I would say that the weight of the body that everyone carries with is also important. There’s a difference if a backpacker weighs 80 kilos and if he weighs 60 kilos. So first of all, I would start with radical weight loss.

  29. I’m checking out your channel for a different reason. I want to get into Motocamping. Long distance camping with only what I carry on my motorcycle. It makes sense to me that a lot of this gear will cross over.

  30. I use the Thinlight Foam Pad, but the foldable one. Same size and even more practical.
What I don’t understand is how you get 2 liter dirty water into a one-liter bottle.
