Is DIY Engine Hoist REALLY Worth the Effort for Lifting?

Is DIY Engine Hoist REALLY Worth the Effort for Lifting?

Can you really lift an engine or any heavy car parts without an engine hoist??? If you have a hitch then yes!!! Buy a Harbor Freight hitch step, truck crane, hitch jack, and optional wench. That will get any engine or other heavy objects up with no problem.

  1. What’s all this β€œbuy” garbage? For those of us that just occasionally removed engines we used just rent an engine hoist. Is that not a thing anymore?

  2. Absolutely worth doing and pretty common too. Make sure to use a CASTERING wheel on your trailer jack. One ideal wheel is a round-shank scaffolding caster which won’t apply sideways force to your trailer jack. I weld two hunks of flat bar to all my engine hoists so I can install a pulley (which I fit very loosely for easy motion) and drop my winch or Wyeth-Scott puller cable over that.

BTW what many miss is this method does away with engine hoist LEGS under your vehicle being worked on. I

  3. Bro idk if you know this or not. But that’s still and engine hoist regardless of if it’s hitch mount or on wheels. This video is literally useless.

  4. Brilliant! Exactly what I was looking for. I’ve done many BMW engine swaps in the past and now I have to do one again, but don’t want to buy an engine crane to take up more room in the garage and become a the perfect tripping hazard. This is perfect and can be easily used for other things with a truck bed. But the best thing is that it can easily be stored out of the way when you’re done with it πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘

  5. A wench is woman a winch is what you should have said. However a winch is usually characterized by a rope or cable. Maybe say hoist or cherry picker. Look like a decent facsimile of a project I watched about a year ago he had two stabilizers.

  6. For those that are n the engine hoist camp: there are no front legs to get in the way with this method. Can’t tell you how many times a tire got in the way with a traditional cherry picker legs.

  7. Limited space? Only enough room for a pickup truck and an engine hoist? Have we got the solution for you. πŸ€“

  8. Thanks bro!! I have the same idea minus the jack. Every time I lift a LS engine/transmission combo it will bend. I think the jack will stop that. Thanks!!!

  9. You need to take an engine without an engine hoist and limited space??? Take the truck to the close space and buy a thing like an engine hois but listen not an engine hoist and take it out man ,easy😊

  10. Just fyi. The step you show will pull off the plate. I tried what you show and attempted to pull a 289 from an older mustang. The weight literally ripped the welds off the "step" portion. Have since ordered new 1/2" plate to go under the receiver extension and new grade 8 bolts.

  11. Hey buddy, is that a Datsun 510 in the background? If it is what are your plans with it if ya don’t mind me asking. Thumbs up on your video. πŸ‘
