MY PERFECT COOK SYSTEM FOR SOLO BACKPACKING

I bought the GSI Outdoors Minimalist cooking pot 13 years ago and I’ve never changed it! I’ve actually bought 3… Two for wild camping or backpacking and one for my campervan to enhance my vanlife. I don’t think it can be beaten! Yes you can buy titanium which is slightly lighter but titanium often burns your food which sticks to the pot. The insulating neoprene sleeve and sealed drinkable lid allow you to sip slowly and enjoy your hot ‘cuppa’ for longer even through cold winter nights on a mountain in your tent. I would highly recommend it as i have dully tried and tested it!

Completing my cook set with the added extras just add to the convenience and luxury to your wild camp or backpacking experience. Small, ultra lightweight and all self contained within the pot. Perfection👌

  1. I just use one of those cheap white with blue thin stripes on them clothes from Asda, pack of 10 for a pound to stop my canister scratching, they are some sort of think nylon type material I think, very absorbant if needed and they don’t wear out.

  2. I use a 750ml toaks pot. I’ve made three round pieces of bubble wrap and one strip of it with some electrical tape. The first round goes in, then my gas canister, the strip goes around the gas canister, then another round. Then my stove, lighter and gripper and then the last piece of bubble wrap on top, then close the lid. With the orange sleeve over top everything is very snug. You wont even hear the lighter and stove rattling. Its amazing.

  3. I’ve used this method in the past. But haven’t used gas in over a year since I got my X-Boil. Fantastic bit of kit that. Although, I may go to gas when I do some of my fast packing trips later this year, as it means I can stop off for a brew and get back on with ticking off those miles quicker.

  4. I’ve solved all those problems . I use a Trangia alcohol stove. No noise . I solved the rattling with a small face towel in which I wrap loose small objects. With alcohol there is no waste. As soon as things are cooked you choke the flame and screw the cap on. Some will say that it takes more time. I will answer, what do you have to do after eating other than waste time? Ps, you can find alcohol everywhere, even gas stations…

  5. Great video and a very neat solution, which weighs in at around 500g complete… However, ignoring the purchase of the Bic lighters and Swiss army knife, the total cost comes in at £93.70 plus the cost of the gas cannister — which are £5 or £6 — So should we call it a round £100.00? That’s a lot of money to shell out on a one-pot cooking system. You also have some wastage, in the form of the five extra red silicone cake moulds an extra black silicone ‘bottle boot’, when you only need one of each.

I suppose you could carefully trim the lip/rim from the top of another red silicone cake mould to create a second silicone cup that will slide into the pot (replacing the ‘Bottle Boot’) to save a few quid, but I think I’ll stick with my trusty Trangia 27 — at 2/3 the cost — which is still going strong after 40 years with only a couple of replacement seals for the burner in that time (and a spare pair of socks and a sponge pot cleaner to stop the rattle!!). It may weigh 190g more, but I have two pots and frying pan/lid … And it burns in any weather conditions.

Keep up the good work though … I admire your ingenuity!

  6. Great idea Al, its good to see that no matter how much camping you do, there is still an improvement to be made! Its nice to see something that I can use, I love your camping videos but there is no way I am ever going to own a £1000 sleeping bag!

  7. Part of my job is process engineering, problem solving, improving effectiveness and efficiency, so seeing this sort of stuff is great.
I remember the stove wind sheild a long time back….. you said you might make and sell them, maybe you should have! 👍🏻

  8. Hey! Is that gas canister with bulge going to expode any minute? I would be scared of it a lot..! 😆

  9. Good tips..👍
The gas canister goes cold when you use it, is because it’s taking heat energy from it’s surrounding in converting the liquid into gas. So you shouldn’t insulate your gas bottle as it’s not getting external heat energy. Best on cold days carry inside jacket/shake gas bottle vigorously before use (putting heat energy)

  10. ❤ Love the silicone “thingy”! I’ll try that asap. FYI – never have I had the bottom of my canister get rusty. Ever. I just dry my pot out every time… doesn’t everyone?? 😮

  11. A great solution, thanks for sharing it will help with my fishing set up as space is a premium in my kit box, love it thank you.

  12. just been wildcamping in buttermere, just on on the moss about 600m up, beautiful views. 2nd night i was there i got gale force winds up to 103mph 11pm til about 4 am, i have never been that worried before in my life haha. the whole time i was liyng there tho i was just laughing/shitting it coz WHAT CAN U DO.

managed to pack up and get down to the village as soon as it got light enough.

got to say mate, ur videos helped me know what to do and what theres no point trying to do so cheers and hope to see more adventures with u and blue.
    all the best, jake.

  13. Gas waste time in cold weather I find here in NZ try all kinds of gas cans not one work well a fuel cooker will not let you down

  14. Brilliant idea that, I’ve got the same pot and it’s really annoying when u forget to remove the canister when u get home and it leaves the bottom of the pot with rust residue, just ordered myself the silicone sleeve 👍😎

  15. You might be able to use a little bit of paint or nail polish around the bottom rim of the canister to prevent rust. The rust is likely due to a phenomenon where dissimilar metals being in contact promotes corrosion.

  16. I enjoy these short videos on equipment and system hacks, please do more. ( footwear , mats, clothing, etc )

  17. I’ll never use this equipment but nonetheless i really enjoyed listening to you talk about it!

  18. Good Vid. Al .
Little tip .put the empty canister in the freezer for an hour before refilling.
    It takes more in.

  19. Some people think you’re crazy when you shave off 20g from something BUT multiple items slightly lighter really adds up! It’s part of the fun of packing for me!

  20. Errr… Way over engineering a simple problem here. Kitchen roll to line your cooking pot before placing the canister in?

  21. Your small canister is ready for a switch regardless of what method you prefer… using a rag and a non rusty canister is clearly the way to go you don’t need to buy an entire new cook pot set to solve this

  22. I didn’t solve any problems with Amazon, but I learned to avoid some problems by avoiding Amazon. I had run into time consuming problems trying to follow their rhetoric and pricing. Nothing earth shaking, just unnecessary folderol. I purchase from other sources quicker, more simply, and cheaper. A better choice for my wants and needs.
Others obviously like Amazon. It’s just a matter of personal choice.

  23. why don’t you put a small rag with oil under the canister. problem solved with 2grams investment. the canister won’t rust and rattle.

  24. I just use a piece of kitchen paper in the bottom and put the gas cannister in upside down. Stove, lighter and tripod stand all fit on top, then put the lid on. No rattles. Pot has a foldable handle.

  25. Silicone lips do not work on an Aluminum cup I have, and they are not needed on the Ti cups due to the lower thermal conductivity of the Ti.
